''The Mastersingers of Nuremberg'' is a music drama written by the famous German composer Richard Wagner in 1868. The story is set in Nuremberg, Germany, in the 16th century and revolves around the guild of master singers who compete in a singing contest. The protagonist, Walther von Stolzing, is a young knight who falls in love with Eva, the daughter of a wealthy merchant. To win her hand in marriage, Walther must compete in the singing contest and prove himself worthy of becoming a master singer. However, he faces opposition from the traditionalist guild members who do not believe that he is a true master singer. The drama explores themes of love, tradition, and the conflict between the old and the new. The book was first performed in Munich in 1868 and has since become one of Wagner?s most popular works.
