In Egypt he was the chair of the World Language Department at Cairo American College where he taught both native and non-native Arabic speakers. He has served as a linguistic advisor to the Sesame Street Workshop and also has experience as a news announcer and talk show host. Dr. Amer is currently a faculty member of the Department of Religion and the Department of Linguistics at the University of Georgia, Athens. His research interests include student-centered classrooms in Arabic studies, early Islamic literature, and the phonetics of the Quran. He is the Imam of the Islamic Center in Athens, GA.
