Sinopsis

'Der Friede' (Peace) is a classical comedy by the ancient Greek playwright Aristophanes. This satirical play, originally performed in 421 BC during the Peloponnesian War, follows the story of Trygaeus, an Athenian farmer who flies to Mount Olympus on a dung beetle to plead with Zeus to end the war between Athens and Sparta. Finding the gods have abandoned Greece, Trygaeus, with the help of a chorus of Greek citizens, rescues Peace from a deep pit where she has been imprisoned by War. The play is a strong appeal for peace and a humorous critique of the political and social conditions of ancient Athens. Aristophanes masterfully blends fantasy, humor, and social commentary, offering a timeless message about the futility of war and the enduring desire for peace. This edition provides readers with a valuable glimpse into the world of classical Greek drama and the enduring themes that continue to resonate with modern audiences. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
