Sinopsis

Hudibras frey verteutscht is a German translation of Samuel Butler?s celebrated English satirical poem, 'Hudibras.' Originally published in three parts between 1662 and 1678, Butler?s work lampoons the Puritan and Parliamentarian factions prevalent during the English Civil War. This German rendition, translated by Dietrich Wilhelm Soltau, makes Butler?s sharp wit and social commentary accessible to a German-speaking audience in the late 18th century. 'Hudibras' follows the adventures of Sir Hudibras, a knight errant, and his squire Ralpho, as they embark on various misadventures, providing ample opportunity for Butler to satirize hypocrisy, religious zealotry, and political extremism. This translation offers a unique perspective on the reception and interpretation of English literature in continental Europe, highlighting the enduring appeal of Butler?s satire across linguistic and cultural boundaries. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
